Chicago’s only food co-op in Logan Square echoes the ethos of the sustainable food movement by reclaiming waste and working in harmony with the land (or in this case the structure). The existing wood floor was refinished, existing masonry walls were cleaned and sealed, reclaimed wall and floor tiles were installed in the restroom, and existing entry doors were adaptively reused and now function as operable windows in the newly designed vestibule enclosure. ¬†Additionally, the existing duct work takes on another life as new lighting fixtures which was designed by UIC industrial design students. The roof now functions as a green roof and is planted with an edible landscape to help retain stormwater, reduce urban heat island effect, and, most importantly, provide produce stock for the store.
