The renovation of the Charred Wood & Glass House redefines a classic Victorian home, balancing heritage with modernity on a rare wide lot in Chicago. The rear addition, clad in charred shou sugi ban wood, creates a striking counterpoint to the historic façade while maintaining the home’s inherent character. The split-level layout enhances spatial flow, culminating in a grand living area where the kitchen and family room merge.

At the heart of the addition, an expansive folding glass wall visually dissolves the barrier between indoors and out, opening fully to the rear yard—the home’s focal point. This dynamic interplay of old and new, solid and transparent, fosters a living environment that is both timeless and contemporary.
The artisan-made bronze range hood is at the heart of the kitchen’s design composition, a sculptural focal point that anchors the space above the cooktop. The quartz countertops and backsplash add subtle contrast, complemented by bronze plumbing fixtures. A distinctive design flourish comes in the form of a custom bronze band wrapped around the island, creating a visual break between the cabinetry countertop.
