Design Process
The existing two-story masonry building was a former shopkeeper building with a ground-floor retail space and a second-floor apartment.
The main program centers around a main suite being added to the second floor of the existing floor, consisting of two bedrooms and one bathroom. We formed the cantilevered, Corten steel addition at the back with a double-height bedroom, bathroom, and private deck.
The overhang provides shade and collects water that can be used in the garden. We opened up the enclosed staircase and designed a custom guardrail made from blackened steel and white oak.
