Hoorah! It is time, again, for the ActiveTrans Bike Commuter Challenge, starting tomorrow. Companies all over the city will band together and compete to see who can rack up the most participation percentage (we always get 100%) and the most miles (Chris usually ranks in the to 20 in the city for individual mileage).
How does the Bike Commuter Challenge Help Chicago?
The competitive aspect of the Bike Commuter Challenge is fun but the important thing is that it gets people out on their bikes.
- For regular bikers the BCC serves as a way to communicate and make their habits more visible.
- For people who have commuted by bike in the past, the June date makes for a great reminder to shift away from winter habits and get back on two wheels.
- And for first time bike commuters, the challenge usually proves just how easy and fun it can be to make biking part of your regular list of commute options.
Win, win, win!
How does it work?
It couldn’t be simpler.
Anyone can join, either hopping onto their existing workplace team or making their own team (the first person from a company automatically becomes Team Captain and can invite their coworkers). Just follow this link www.bikecommuterchallenge.org/ and create a username and password. Then you record each day how if you did part or all of commute to work with a bike and how many miles you rode. The challenge keeps track of your data, and tells you how many gallons of gas and how much CO2 you’ve saved to boot! This year there is even an app so you can log the data on your phone.
To win you simply need to get 100% participation for your company if you’re small like moss. Bigger companies or organizations aim as high as they can. Last year the Center For Neighborhood Technology got a 72% participation score with an employee pool of 147. Impressive!
Here’s how moss has done with the Challenge in the past: 2013, 2014.
In case you didn’t already know, Moss loves bikes and biking, which is why we’re so excited about the BCC. Here’s some of our enthusiastic Bike coverage from the past:
